In my humble opinion - speed dating is as cheap as chips! Really... it's around £20 to meet 20 girls or guys in 2 hours and after waiting 20 years to meet 2 girls - you can't loose and I can say that its a great night out as well as an easy way to meet new people. It's just a case of.. do you have the bottle to do it?:) You might consider taking some mates along as this kind of event is always better when you have the backup of your friends should you need to hide or bounce conversation off or about your friends. There's also zero need to drink to get over speed date nerves - tho just one might help the conversation a little combined with the generally grovvey background tunes they play at these things. just relax and have fun.
